A Love Letter to Georgia Muslims 💌

By Samiah Rahman

Dear Readers,

My name is Samiah Rahman and I am a senior at Georgia State studying business. I had the pleasure of interning at GAMVP for the majority of 2023. I applied to work at Georgia Muslim Voter Project because my long term goals include attending law school, and I wanted to grow my skill sets in the political field. Working at GAMVP was a great experience and I truly enjoyed being a part of such an amazing community.

As a communications intern, I learned about legislation, voter statistics, civic engagement, and much more from a logistical perspective. My experience at GAMVP changed the way I see the democratic process because I was able to experience the intricacies of these processes. I will always see the democratic process in a different light because of the skills and knowledge I have obtained through my position.

Seeing how active the Muslim community is something that makes me proud of our people. As Muslims, we need to carry ourselves piously and use our voices to stand up for one another. It is our responsibility to decide who our lawmakers are and what we want to accomplish through the laws being passed. I was delighted to see so many people taking initiative by participating in the voting process and civic engagement. Seeing the turn out on National Muslim Voter Registration Day, at our Community Conversations, and engaging on our social media, and pledging to vote, exemplified how much Georgia Muslims actually care about civic engagement. People of all backgrounds coming together to share their perspectives is a testament to our commitment to making a difference.

Overall, my experience working with GAMVP was insightful and pushed me to advocate for Georgia Muslim communities even more. As I see political events, setbacks, and discrimination towards our people arise, I intend to use the insights and knowledge I acquired to advocate for myself and my community, inshAllah. Thank you to the GAMVP community for teaching me thus far and I can't wait to participate in future events as a GAMVP member.

Sincerely,

Samiah Rahman
