Georgia Muslim Voter Project (GAMVP) condemns Governor Brian Kemp’s signing of SB222 into law.
SB222 is a harmful piece of legislation that poses a serious threat to the ability of county boards of elections to effectively administer elections in Georgia. The bill prohibits private funding to counties for election administration costs and even threatens felony convictions for officials who accept outside funding. This measure would have significant ramifications for county election boards, which have been consistently overburdened with unfunded mandates imposed by the state.
“County election boards are already struggling to fully administer elections, which directly impacts counties with large minority populations including Muslim community members. Insufficient funding makes it more difficult for county election boards to recruit and retain staff, leading to longer lines and greater challenges for voters. SB222 threatens to exacerbate this situation, making it even more challenging for county election boards to carry out their important work in the year leading up to the 2024 presidential election.” - Asim Javed, Senior Community Organizer at Georgia Muslim Voter Project
Georgia is home to approximately 150,000 Muslims, and many of them already experience hardships while voting. Georgians have a fundamental right to cast their ballot without the added burden of long lines and outdated polling machines.
GAMVP will continue to advocate for fair elections and protection of civil rights. For more information contact Urooj Ali, Communications Coordinator.
